Group Photo
Social proof if used right. Confusion if used wrong. Never photo 1.
A group photo signals that you have friends — useful social proof. But it forces the viewer to figure out which person you are, which costs valuable seconds you don't have. The result: group photos work in position 3 or later but almost never in position 1 or 2.
When it works
- ✓You're clearly identifiable — center frame or with a visual cue (you're laughing the hardest, etc.)
- ✓Group of 3-4, not 8+
- ✓Real social context — wedding, dinner, event
When it fails
- ✗Position 1 — viewer doesn't know who you are
- ✗Big group of 8+ — you're a face in a crowd
- ✗Same-gender lineup where you blend in
- ✗Group photo where you're clearly not the most attractive person — distracting comparison

- →Crop tight enough that you're clearly the subject
- →Pick a group shot where your face is at the center or front
Avoid
- ×Photo 1 group shots — automatic swipe-left risk
- ×Bachelor/bachelorette party shots — they look messy at thumbnail size
