Mirror Selfie

The most controversial photo type in dating. Sometimes works. Usually doesn't.

The mirror selfie is the default option when you don't have anyone to take your photo. It's also the photo type most associated with low-effort profiles. The truth is more nuanced: a great mirror selfie outperforms a mediocre 'real' photo. A bad one is the worst photo on the app.

When it works

  • Full-body shot in a clean setting (gym, hotel, home with a tidy background)
  • Outfit clearly intentional — you're showing fit, not just standing there
  • Good lighting (natural window light, not bathroom fluorescents)
  • One per profile, max — never two

When it fails

  • Phone visible in the frame at full size — distracting
  • Bathroom backdrop with toilet, tube of toothpaste, or drying laundry visible
  • Yellow indoor lighting making skin look jaundiced
  • Position 1 of your profile

Do this

  • Use natural light — preferably from a window beside the mirror
  • Tidy the background — even thirty seconds of de-cluttering changes the photo
  • Hold the phone in front of your chest, not in front of your face
  • Smile or smirk — neutral expressions look performative in mirror selfies

Avoid

  • ×Bathroom selfies — automatic credibility hit
  • ×Flexing or shirtless in a public bathroom
  • ×Posed-too-hard angles — chin down, side stance, dead-fish face

Best position

Position 3+

Use this photo type at position 3+ of your profile. Photos in the wrong slot underperform even when the photo itself is good.
