Candid Photo

The single highest-converting photo type when done well.

A genuine candid — captured mid-laugh, mid-movement, mid-conversation — outperforms every other photo type. The reason is psychological: the brain detects authenticity in micro-expressions, and posed photos compress those expressions. A candid shows you in the actual living of your life.

When it works

  • Position 1 — the strongest possible position
  • Taken by a friend at a real event, not staged
  • Eye contact with whoever took the photo
  • Visible context — restaurant, hike, friend's wedding

When it fails

  • Fake-candid (looking-off-camera-laughing-at-nothing) — viewers detect the staging
  • Burst-mode candid where the chosen frame is mid-blink
  • Candid in a setting that makes no sense (parking lot, hotel hallway)

Do this

  • Have a friend take 30 photos at a real event — pick the 2 best
  • Burst mode is your friend — but only when actively shooting an event
  • Look for moments of genuine reaction, not just generic-laughs

Avoid

  • ×Photographer-staged candids — they have a recognizable look
  • ×Filters that smooth skin — they kill the authenticity that's the entire point

Best position

Position 1

Use this photo type at position 1 of your profile. Photos in the wrong slot underperform even when the photo itself is good.
