Love Language

The framework that people give and receive love primarily through one of five modes.

Definition

The five love languages — words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, physical touch, gift-giving — come from Gary Chapman's 1992 book. The thesis: people preferentially give love in their own language and feel loved through their preferred language, and mismatch causes friction. The framework is wildly popular in dating discourse, though academics debate how scientifically grounded it is.
